Insects, microbes, and the environment — from mutualism to parasitism.
Insects, microbes, and the environment — from mutualism to parasitism.
My research focuses on uncovering the complex interactions between insects, their associated microorganisms, and the environment, spanning relationships from mutualism to parasitism. By integrating theoretical frameworks with experimental approaches, I investigate how microbial partners influence the ecology, evolution, and behavior of their insect hosts. This work advances fundamental understanding of host–microbe interactions while addressing broader challenges in health, agriculture, and ecosystem resilience.
Based at the Estación Científica COIBA-AIP in Panamá, the laboratory combines field-based studies with controlled laboratory experiments, leveraging tools from microbial ecology, experimental evolution, behavioral analysis, molecular biology, and quantitative modeling.
The laboratory, headed by Dr. Bruner-Montero, welcomes inquiries from prospective graduate students and undergraduate researchers with interests at the intersection of host–microbe biology, ecology, and evolution.
